As the University of Nairobi gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies (IAGAS) will also be celebrating 50 years since inception.

“IAGAS is as old as the university.” Said Prof. Onyango Ouma, the current director of the institute.

“IAGAS formerly known as the Institute of African Studies started as a cultural division of the Institute for Development Studies in 1967 and in 1970 the Institute became full-fledged and moved to its current location inside the National Museums of Kenya compound.”  Added Prof. Ouma.

Over the years, IAGAS has been involved in exciting research including on documenting socio-cultural issues of Kenyan communities resulting in the "District Socio-Cultural Profile Publications." among others.

“The Institute has also produced renowned public servants and global leaders including Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, (UNCTAD) and Rift Valley regional commissioner, Mr. George Natembeya among many others” Said Prof. Ouma.

“As an alumnus and current Director of IAGAS, I am very proud to celebrate this milestone and we are solely committed to producing top notch graduates who will positively impact communities across the nation and the globe.” Said the director.

From July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021 the University of Nairobi shall be having a year-long 50-year Anniversary Celebration
